Art of Noren in Katsuyama, Maniwa City

Katsuyama is in Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture. It has a popular sightseeing spot called Historical Katsuyama Town Conservation Area just like Kurashiki Bikan Quarter where traditional houses and buildings are preserved with efforts. On top of that, Katsuyama is known for its noren production.

What is Noren?

Well, noren is the cloth hung between rooms. It can be seen at store entrance as well like in a photo below. This is a kominka Cafe Meijiya that we previously featured. It definitely adds a store something anyhow, doesn’t it? What’s interesting about this area in Katuyama is that almost every store/house has a noren at the entrance with a different design. OK, let’s go take a look.
